India
I did manage to take time out from our travels around India to go and visit some of the local artists. They sit on the floor to work and can copy any subject to any scale. The painting is done mainly on stretched silk, using water based paint and very fine brushes. The tedious work, backgrounds etc. are done by the apprentices, with the final intricate detail executed by the master artist. I sat in on one of the sessions and could not believe how uncomfortable it felt, and trying to paint without supporting my wrist with a maul stick was impossible for me. I must say their attitude to the whole business was refreshing and they were great fun to be with.
